Until our team can get out to your site, please use the following Do's and Don'ts

DO's

  • Call us immediately to review questions or concerns you may have with any items
  • Wear clean/new disposable gloves if you are tempted to touch anything. (Oils from your hands can transpose and set the soot.)
  • Wear a clean mask to avoid inhaling loose soot.
  • Discard open food near the source of the fire.
  • Cover carpeted traffic areas to prevent deepening of and transferral of soot.
  • If electrical service is off, clean out refrigerator and freezer.
  • Wipe the leaves of house plants with a wet paper towwl to remove smoke residue.
  • Wash China, glasses, crystal, etc. in the dishwasher if possible
  • Turn off heating & cooling system to prevent further spread of soot.
  • Place damp cheesecloth over intake and outtake vents to prevent further spreading of soot.

DONT's

  • Do not try to clean soot-covered surfaces after a fire. There are several types of soot, which affect different surfaces differently and improper cleaning can lead to greater loss.
  • Do not touch anything. Oils from your hands can permeate causing further damage. (If you must, then put on clean/new disposable gloves.)
  • Do not eat food or use personal hygiene items that have been exposed to smoke.
  • Do not attempt to clean or wash smoke or soot off walls, wallpaper, ceiling, surfaces, upholstered furniture, etc.
  • Do not use electrical appliances that were close to the fire.
  • Do not use ceiling fixtures such as fans and recessed lights if affected by smoke damage and/or water damage.
